For printed boats, we use specialist PLA variants with additives that improve properties such as strength, impact resistance, elasticity and heat resistance.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe two variants of PLA that we use for printed boats are \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/uk.store.bambulab.com\/products\/pla-tough-upgrade\" title=\"BambuLap PLA Tough\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eBambuLab PLA Tough +\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/shop.polymaker.com\/en-gb\/products\/polymax-pla\" title=\"PolyMax PLA\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003ePolymaker Polymax PLA \u003c\/a\u003e(Previously called Polymer PLA Tough).\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBoth of these filaments can produce a strong hull with a good surface finish that requires little post-print sanding when printed on a well-tuned printer.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003edownside\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eof PLA is\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethat it softens at around 55°C,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eso\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ea\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eboat\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eleft in direct\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003esun or in a hot car\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003emay\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ewarp\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e or deform. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThat\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eshould not put you off:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eif you want a\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003estrong\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eboat that will survive most on-water incidents, PLA is an excellent choice.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYou\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003esimply\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eneed to look after\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eit properly.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan\u003eASA\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"\u003eASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is an improved form of ABS, offering more flexibility and ultimate strength than standard ABS. We tend to use \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/uk.store.bambulab.com\/products\/asa-filament\" title=\"BambuLab ASA\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eBambuLab ASA\u003c\/a\u003e because we have found it to be the most reliable option.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eASA is much harder to print than PLA and cannot be printed reliably on basic 3D printers.
